Why is foundation repair such a big deal in Texas?
Expansive clay soils, slab-on-grade construction and hard drought cycles combine badly. Clay shrinks as it dries and swells as it wets, and a slab poured directly on it is flexed every time the moisture swings. TREC's guidance for Texas inspectors notes that some movement is normal in clay soil areas and that the damaging kind is differential movement, where one part of the foundation moves more than another.
